A firmer, more robust head than butterhead, and it travels better

Batavia, sold in several markets as greenleaf, has a crisper and more robust leaf than butterhead with a looser, wavier head. That structure makes it more tolerant of handling and transport, which is why it appears where supply chains are longer or warmer.

What the crop needs

The crop is short-cycle and hydroponic. The firmer leaf gives it more tolerance of a warm finish than butterhead has, but the head still has to fill evenly, and density is a cultivar property rather than a target the grower sets. Cycle turnaround and spacing changes as heads expand drive how many crops a year the house delivers.

What the greenhouse has to do

Batavia is firmer than butterhead and survives handling and distance better, which widens the market one house can serve. That opens the site decision: a crop that travels can be grown further from its buyer, so cooling and pack capacity matter more in the layout than proximity to the door does.

Underneath it is short-cycle lettuce. Many turns a year mean density, the recirculating water system and the harvest route decide annual output. A firmer leaf tolerates a little more variation than butterhead does, but not at the margins: tipburn still follows transpiration, and even air movement through the canopy is what holds it off.

Is head weight or head count the right target?

Lettuce is sold by the head, so the count reaching grade in a year decides revenue. A heavier head grown more slowly can earn less than a lighter head on a shorter cycle.

Does the cultivar matter more than the type?

For head mass, density tolerance and tipburn risk, yes. Those are cultivar properties, which is why a lettuce project is planned around a named cultivar rather than around the type alone.

What causes tipburn?

Calcium not reaching the fastest-growing leaf margins, driven by transpiration and root pressure rather than by supply. Climate control addresses it; adding calcium to the solution generally does not.
