Mini cucumber is a small, thin-skinned fruit sold in multipacks and eaten without peeling. It is the type where the gap between the name and the product is widest: cultivars sold as mini decades ago were far heavier than the fruit the name describes today, so a specification written around the label alone will not produce the fruit a buyer expects.

What the crop needs

The crop is grown on substrate and carried on a high wire under the species climate recipe. Its distinguishing demand is harvest frequency: a small fruit reaching grade quickly means frequent picking, and a crop left a day too long moves out of the size specification rather than simply growing larger. Labour planning follows the pick interval, not the tonnage.

What the greenhouse has to do

Mini cucumber is picked often, and the greenhouse is laid out for that. A small fruit passes through its size window quickly, so the crop is walked far more frequently than a long cucumber crop. Path layout, internal transport and the distance from the furthest row to the pack area decide how much of the labour budget the walking consumes.

The climate work is cucumber climate: high transpiration, fast response, irrigation and humidity sized for the peak. What the size window adds is a low tolerance for variation. A cool bay or a dry section does not produce a smaller crop, it produces fruit outside the specification, so even transmission and even water delivery across the whole floor are what the building is being asked for.
