Dutch Greenhouse
Dutch greenhouse is the common international name for the Venlo greenhouse: the Dutch-developed glass structure with a repeating multi-ridge roof on gutter-connected steel, engineered for maximum light transmission with minimal structural shadow.
The two names describe the same structure. Venlo is the technical designation, after the Dutch town where the type was first built in the 1930s; Dutch greenhouse is what buyers, agronomists and press outside the Netherlands call it. Specifications, standards and calculations use the Venlo name, so a tender written around a Dutch greenhouse and one written around a Venlo greenhouse describe the same roof geometry, the same gutter spacing and the same EN 13031 load case.
Used loosely, Dutch greenhouse also stands for the whole Dutch approach rather than the structure alone: the glass house together with the climate control, screening, irrigation and cultivation practice that developed around it. That wider sense is why the term appears in contexts where no Venlo roof is involved at all, including our own company name.
