Growing where the climate is an input, not a condition
Open-field agriculture produces what the weather permits. A season is good or it is not, and the grower absorbs the difference. Controlled-environment agriculture removes that dependency by putting the crop inside a structure whose conditions are specified rather than observed — and the commercial consequence is not simply higher yield but a predictable one. A buyer can be promised volume on a date. That single shift, from harvest as an outcome to harvest as a schedule, is what makes protected growing bankable in places where open-field farming is not.
CEA is defined by the degree of control rather than by any particular building. It runs as a spectrum: at one end a shade house that tempers the sun and nothing else, at the other a sealed room where temperature, humidity, carbon dioxide and light are each held to a setpoint. Everything in between is a matter of how many variables the structure takes charge of. That is why protected cultivation is the broader category and CEA the narrower one inside it — a structure can protect a crop without controlling anything.
The division that matters commercially sits one level further down, and it is about light. In greenhouse horticulture the sun is the primary light source and the building’s work is to trap, transmit and manage it; supplemental lamps top that up. In indoor farming light is generated outright, and the crop is grown without daylight at all. The first buys a large share of its energy from the sky for nothing; the second buys all of it, and pays for the control that brings. Neither is the better answer in the abstract — the site’s latitude, radiation and electricity price decide it.
