A threshold you cannot measure is not a threshold

The IPM sequence turns on a decision made against a threshold, and a threshold requires a count. That makes scouting the load-bearing step rather than the administrative one: without it, prevention cannot be evaluated, biological control cannot be judged sufficient or insufficient, and intervention reverts to being triggered by whatever a grower happens to notice. Every principle downstream of monitoring inherits its quality from it.

The method is a systematic walk rather than an inspection. Sticky traps sample the flying population continuously and give the trend that a single observation cannot; fixed scouting rounds cover the house on a defined route so that the same positions are read week after week and a rise is visible as a rise. Digital platforms now capture those observations in the field and map them, which turns a notebook into a distribution — and where a pest is concentrated matters as much as how many there are.

The failure mode is representativeness rather than precision. A count taken from convenient positions describes those positions, and a greenhouse is not uniform: a gable end, a vent line and the middle of a bay have different climates and therefore different pressure. This mirrors what substrate sensing already established on the irrigation side — several fixed positions plus deliberate cross-checks elsewhere beat one very accurate reading, because what is being detected is a difference rather than a value.

Monitoring also closes the loop that European law asks for: the eighth IPM principle requires the grower to check whether the measures actually worked, which is only possible against a record.
