Premium fruit, twelve months a year — anywhere
Following the success of leafy greens in controlled-environment cultivation, strawberries are now joining the portfolio of crops that can be grown indoors. With fruit rather than leaves, genetics and cultivation protocol matter even more: the central question is how to maximise yield while holding on to superior product quality. Research across the sector is actively looking at simpler cultivation structures and at reducing the intensive use of growing media, both of which feed directly into the business case.
Strawberries fall into two broad categories, and the choice shapes the whole operation. June-bearing varieties crop heavily over a concentrated three-to-four-month window, which makes young-plant production, crop replacement and the natural variation in fruit size across the season critical to manage. Ever-bearing varieties, by contrast, stay in production for ten to eleven months and deliver more stable, even fruit sizes over time — often the better fit where continuous supply is the goal.
Light is where indoor cultivation really differentiates itself. In strawberry greenhouses growers already use far-red lamps to lift production, but only a fully enclosed indoor farm gives complete control over the entire light supply. That control translates into higher sugar levels — measured in Brix — which is one of the clearest indicators of eating quality. Combined with steered photoperiod and temperature, it lets a grower spread production across the year and target the premium winter market when field fruit is scarce.
Proximity to market is a further advantage. Fresh strawberries are highly perishable, and long transport — especially air freight where fruit is chilled and thawed — noticeably degrades quality. Growing close to the consumer protects the product, and because the environment is fully controlled, that local production can be achieved in virtually any climate. The main challenge for the sector remains reaching a cost-competitive level, which comes down to selecting the right genetics, keeping the cultivation structure simple and controlling the ongoing cost of consumables and labour.
