An indoor farm is, at its core, a precisely controlled box — and the box itself is what makes the control possible. Unlike a greenhouse, which works with the sun and the outside climate, an indoor farm shuts them out entirely: the structure is built as an airtight, thermally insulated shell so that every variable inside, from temperature and humidity to CO₂ and light, is set by the grower rather than the weather. Get the envelope right and the climate systems can hold conditions rock-steady; get it wrong and they fight uncontrolled heat gain and moisture ingress all day.
Construction typically uses insulated sandwich panels for the walls and ceiling and hygienic, cleanable floors, creating a sealed cell that holds its climate and resists the humidity that controlled-environment growing generates. Hygiene is engineered in, not added later: smooth surfaces, sealed joints and wash-down finishes keep the growing environment clean, which for a crop with no pesticides and a food-safe promise is fundamental rather than cosmetic.
Inside that shell, multi-layer racking turns a single floor footprint into many growing layers, and this is where structural design becomes an optimisation problem. Rack height has to be balanced against the logistics aisles needed to move crops through the space, and against the airflow required to keep climate uniform across every layer. Each additional layer multiplies output — but it also multiplies the airflow and lighting complexity, because the top and bottom of a tall rack must see the same conditions if the crop is to be uniform. There is a real limit beyond which extra layers cost more in climate engineering than they return in production.
