# Year-Round Production

Year-round production is the ability to supply a market on a date rather than in a season, because the structure has removed the weather from the schedule. It is the outcome that most often decides an investment, and the only one of the six carrying no agreed unit.

## Selling a date instead of a harvest

## This is usually the reason the money says yes

A field crop arrives when it arrives. Some years it is early, some years it is thin, and one year in ten it barely comes at all.

A greenhouse turns that into a schedule. You can sign a contract for volume in week 9 and actually deliver in week 9.

That single change — harvest as a schedule rather than harvest as an outcome — is what makes a project bankable in places where field farming never would be. In our experience it decides more investments than yield does.

## What you are actually buying protection from

The season. A closed structure removes it. Winter stops being a gap in your supply.

The extremes. Climate systems hold conditions through the heat wave and the cold snap that would have taken a field crop out.

Pests arriving with the weather. Exclusion and hygiene keep out pressure that is moving into regions it never used to reach.

Distance. Growing near the market shortens a supply chain that otherwise crosses continents to reach the same shelf.

## Say plainly that there is no standard number

The other five outcomes have units. Kilos. Percent. Gigajoules.

This one does not. You can measure it as weeks of continuous supply, as variance against forecast, or as imports displaced — and those three give different answers about the same greenhouse.

So when somebody quotes you a single resilience figure, they have chosen a definition, not reported a standard. Ask which one. It is a fair question and the answer tells you a lot.

## Design against the bad year, not the normal one

Here is the part that costs money and earns it back.

Resilience is bought by sizing to what a site does rarely — the once-a-decade wind, the snow load nobody expects, the heat wave that used to be unusual. A greenhouse optimised for a normal year is by definition under-built for the year that actually tests it.

That is a different calculation from optimising for the average, and it is one of the few places where we will argue for spending more.

**What does climate resilience mean for a greenhouse project?**
The ability to supply a market on a date regardless of the weather outside. Open-field agriculture produces what the season permits; a protected facility produces to a specification. That shift from harvest as an outcome to harvest as a schedule is often the reason the investment is made at all.

**How is security of supply measured?**
There is no agreed metric, and that is worth stating plainly. Candidates include weeks of continuous supply, variance against forecast and share of imports displaced, and they give different answers. Anyone quoting one resilience figure has chosen a definition rather than reported a standard.

**What does a greenhouse actually protect against?**
Four things specifically: the season, which a closed structure removes; heat and cold events that would damage a field crop, which climate systems absorb; pest pressure arriving with a changing climate, which exclusion and hygiene hold off; and a long supply chain, which local production shortens.

It is sized against the extremes a location actually sees rather than its averages. A facility optimised for a normal year is under-specified for the year that matters, so the climate profile used in design has to include the rare conditions rather than smoothing them away.
