Crop protection in a greenhouse is a containment problem rather than a spraying problem. A single species held warm and humid all year suits its pests as well as itself, and none of the checks that limit them outdoors apply inside, so exclusion, hygiene and biological control carry the work.

    A greenhouse holds a single species at high density, in warmth and humidity, with no winter to interrupt it. Every condition engineered for the crop also suits the organisms that feed on it, and none of the natural checks that limit them outdoors apply inside. A pest that establishes in that volume has no season to survive and no predator it did not arrive with, which is why crop protection in a greenhouse is a containment problem rather than a spraying problem.

The response is a sequence, not a product. European law sets out eight general principles of integrated pest management, and the order is the substance of them: prevent first, monitor second, decide against a threshold third, and prefer non-chemical methods wherever they are effective. Dutch practice compresses that into three words — prevention, observation, intervention — and a grower who reverses the order finds that the chemistry stops working, which is the outcome the sequence exists to avoid.

Two constraints make this harder in a greenhouse than in a field, and both are structural. Fine insect mesh over the vents keeps pests out and removes ventilation capacity the greenhouse was sized around, so exclusion is bought with climate. And most fruiting crops are pollinated by bumblebees living in the house, which means every product applied has to be safe for an insect the grower is deliberately keeping alive. Crop protection is therefore constrained by the ventilation design and the pollination strategy before a single product is chosen.

Hygiene carries the rest. Pathogens arrive on hands, tools, footwear and plant material far more reliably than through any engineered route, so the protocol governing people and equipment does more work than the chemistry does. **Why is crop protection harder in a greenhouse than in a field?**
