A tropical humid climate zone is a warm, saturated, year-round greenhouse region — Southeast Asia, equatorial Africa, the Caribbean. Because outside air already carries the moisture load, ventilation removes almost none of it, and dehumidification, insect exclusion and disease pressure govern the design instead of vent area.

## Ventilation is a moisture tool that needs a gradient

Opening a vent removes moisture only if the air arriving can carry more water than the air leaving. That is the entire mechanism.

In a tropical climate the outside air is already close to saturated. There is no gradient. So the vents open, air moves, the grower sees the system working — and almost no water leaves the building.

This is the single most expensive misunderstanding in tropical greenhouse projects, and it is not a matter of sizing. You cannot fix it with more vent area. The physics is not there to exploit.

## Which means dehumidification is active or it is absent

Once venting is off the table as a moisture strategy, the honest options are mechanical: cooling a surface below dew point and draining the condensate, or a drying system that removes water without needing outside air to accept it.

Both cost energy in a climate where nobody expected to need much. That number belongs in the business case from day one, not discovered in year two when disease pressure explains itself.

## No winter means no reset

Temperate growers get a free hygiene break: a cold, dark period that interrupts pest populations whether the grower plans it or not.

Here there is none. Pest and pathogen pressure runs continuously, populations never crash, and exclusion, scouting and hygiene carry a load their Dutch equivalents never have to.

Fine insect mesh also chokes ventilation — which matters less than usual here, because ventilation was not solving the moisture problem anyway.

## What actually works

High structures with large roof vent area for heat, because heat can be vented even when moisture cannot. Insect exclusion sized for year-round pressure. Active dehumidification, budgeted honestly. And a covering choice made on radiation and rain load rather than on insulation, which nothing here needs.

**Why does opening the vents not help in a tropical greenhouse?**
Because there is nowhere for the moisture to go. Ventilation dries a house when the incoming air holds fewer grams of water per cubic metre than the air it replaces — which is normally true because outside air is colder. Tropical air is warm and saturated, so it already carries almost as much water as the greenhouse air does, and the exchange moves air without moving much moisture. You cannot fix it with more vent area.

**How is humidity actually removed in this zone?**
By cooling air below dew point so the moisture condenses out, or by a drying step — both of which cost energy in a way that venting in a temperate climate does not. The system has to be sized as a permanent load rather than a seasonal one.

**Why is insect exclusion more important in the tropics?**
There is no cold season to break the pest cycle, so populations build year-round and pressure never resets. Insect netting, entry hygiene and monitoring are load-bearing parts of the design rather than accessories.

**Is a greenhouse worth building in a tropical climate at all?**
Yes — rain exclusion alone transforms crop quality, and the light is abundant. The design simply solves a different problem than a temperate one: keeping water and pests out and moisture moving, rather than keeping heat in.
