A high-altitude tropical climate zone combines equatorial daylength with elevation-cooled air — the Kenyan highlands, Ethiopia, the Bogotá savanna, highland Ecuador. Consistent light and mild temperatures year-round allow production with minimal heating or cooling, which is why the global cut-flower trade concentrated there.

## The climate that made the global flower trade

    Where: the Kenyan highlands around Naivasha, Ethiopia, the Bogotá savanna and Antioquia in Colombia, the Ecuadorian Andes, highland Tanzania.

## Altitude cancels the worst of the tropics

Sit on the equator and climb to two thousand metres and you get an unusual combination: intense, consistent radiation with genuinely cool nights, and a day length that barely moves across the year.

Cool nights matter more than people expect. Respiration slows, the crop keeps more of what it made during the day, and in cut flowers that shows up directly as stem length and vase life.

This is why Kenya, Ethiopia, Colombia and Ecuador supply a very large share of the world’s cut flowers, and why the sector concentrated there rather than somewhere warmer.

## The problem here is not heat. It is the swing.

Strong daytime radiation and cold nights in the same twenty-four hours is a real climate-control job, not a mild one.

Days need shading and ventilation to keep leaf temperature down. Nights can approach frost at altitude, on the equator, which surprises people every time — so screens are specified for genuine heat retention, and some crops need real heating rather than an emergency circuit.

A greenhouse here is not a simple structure. It is a light and temperature buffer working hard in both directions on the same day.

## Radiation is a material problem too

Ultraviolet load at altitude is high, and it ages plastics faster than the same latitude at sea level. Covering choice and expected service life have to account for it rather than assume temperate behaviour.

The upside is the light itself: with radiation this good and day length this stable, supplemental lighting is rarely the investment it would be in Europe. The daylight gap that justifies lamps in the Netherlands simply does not exist here.

## FAQ
**Why did the global flower trade concentrate in the tropical highlands?**
Equatorial latitude gives a nearly constant twelve-hour day with no seasonal light gap, and elevation removes the tropical heat. The result is a climate that produces consistent quality all year with very little energy spent on correcting it — an advantage no temperate region can match on cost.

**Do greenhouses in this zone need climate equipment at all?**
Less of it, not none. Night temperatures at altitude fall further than people expect, and humidity control matters for quality and disease. The equipment list is shorter and the structure does more of the work.

**What limits production in a high-altitude tropical climate?**
Rarely the climate. Water availability, logistics to export markets, and pest and disease pressure from a year-round growing season are usually the constraints that decide the design and the operation.

**Is high-altitude tropical the same as tropical humid?**
No. They share the daylength and the year-round pest pressure, but elevation removes the heat and much of the humidity load. The dehumidification problem that governs a lowland tropical greenhouse is far smaller here.
