A continental climate zone is a greenhouse region with wide seasonal extremes — Kazakhstan, Ukraine, eastern Europe, the Canadian prairies. One building must survive deep winter snow load and a hot continental summer, so the steel is dimensioned for snow while the same house still needs full ventilation and shading capacity.

## The structure is decided before the climate systems are

    Where: Poland, Ukraine, Russia, Kazakhstan and Central Asia, northern China, the American Midwest, the Canadian prairies, inland Turkey.

## Snow load sets the steel

This is the climate where the structure stops being a commodity.

European greenhouse design fixes wind and snow as characteristic loads read off the building’s location, and a continental winter produces figures a maritime design was never dimensioned for. A frame certified for the Westland is not certified for Almaty, and the gap is not a detail — it is section sizes, column spacing and the whole cost base of the steel.

Getting it wrong is not a performance problem. It is a collapse.

A snowmelt circuit in the roof is standard practice here for the same reason: melting snow before its weight approaches the design load is far cheaper than designing for the load itself.

## Then you need both machines

A continental site can ask for hard heating in January and real cooling in July. Most climates let you optimise for one.

So the climate systems carry two duties, and the screen package usually does as well — energy screens for the winter, shade for the summer, sometimes as separate layers because one cloth cannot do both jobs properly.

That is genuine extra capital, and pretending otherwise is how continental projects get under-specified.

## The diurnal swing is an opportunity

Large day-to-night temperature differences are difficult to hold, and they are also useful.

A buffer tank that stores daytime heat for night-time release fits this climate better than almost any other, because the swing it is levelling is genuinely large. The same store lets the boiler run in daylight for carbon dioxide without wasting the heat.

## FAQ
**Why does snow load matter more than cold in a continental climate?**
Cold is an operating cost; snow is a structural case. Accumulated snow on the roof is a load the frame either carries or does not, and it is read off the local building code before any climate equipment is chosen. A greenhouse certified for the Westland is not certified for Almaty.

**Can one greenhouse handle both a continental winter and summer?**
Yes, but only if both cases are designed for from the start. The frame follows the winter snow case, the ventilation and screening follow the summer peak, and the two requirements are met in the same structure rather than traded against each other.

**What is a snowmelt circuit?**
A heating loop routed through the roof area that melts accumulating snow before its weight approaches the design load. In this zone it is standard equipment, and it has to keep running during exactly the weather most likely to interrupt power.

**Is a continental climate harder to design for than a desert?**
It is a different problem rather than a harder one. A desert greenhouse solves a single dominant condition; a continental greenhouse has to hold two opposite conditions in one envelope, which puts more of the design effort into the structure and the control strategy.
